HERE ARE SOME COMMON ISSUES THE PIED PLUMBER CAN HELP YOU WITH:
Toilet trouble
A leaking cistern could be the hidden reason for dramatically high-water bills in some cases! You may even encounter external leaks or drips forming around the toilet’s bowl or pan. If this is something you’re concerned about, know that toilets can be individually isolated at the bottom. We’re also capable of removing your old toilet and replacing it with the one you’ve always envisioned—it’s astonishing how much of a visual upgrade this can make.
Crisis or not, we maintain a strong plumbing presence near Merrylands and would love to engage in a chat with you!
Shower Complications
Every now and then, you could experience unseen shower leaks emerging from tiny crevices around your taps or showerhead fittings. Our specialists carry thermal imaging tools and can pressure test your shower outlet accurately. Investigating the plumbing should always be the first course of action before spending hundreds resealing components, only to find the problem unresolved.
Our team replaces old, rusted shower heads with brand-new, premium multi-function versions and fits adjustable shower-on-a-rail dispensers, perfect for couples with significant height variations.
Constant Gas Smell
Operating as fully licenced and insured gas fitting professionals in Merrylands, we know what signs to watch for. An unexpected smell of gas near your gas heater, BBQ, stove, or gas meter—or the presence of a light egg-like odour under your flooring—should not be ignored, as they may indicate a leak.
Gas leaks are a potential hazard to your family’s wellbeing, so contacting us is vital to determine your appropriate next steps. We employ the most modern testing and tracing devices to keep your kitchen and heating systems fully operational.
Leaking and Burst Pipes
Water pipes can burst without warning in tricky areas—next to wiring, under concrete, or deep in the garden—causing expensive damage and higher water costs. Fortunately, our expert 24-hour plumbers near Merrylands are always ready to help. We act quickly to fix flood damage, repair or replace burst pipes, and restore your plumbing. From under-sink hose splits to ruptured outdoor copper lines and hidden underground breaks, The Pied Plumber has seen it all. We’ll have you back up and running with minimal fuss.
No Hot Water Merrylands Area
Hot water troubles at home in Merrylands are a common nuisance—don’t delay, call the professionals and restore your comfort swiftly. While many hot water leaks are quick to fix, procrastinating can result in the entire unit breaking down. Often, issues originate from a malfunctioning tempering valve, which affects water temperature at critical points like showers and sinks. We provide full servicing, efficient repairs, and installations of high-quality hot water systems. Every part we use is carefully selected from your closest Reece plumbing supplier to guarantee durability and high performance.
No heat? If your boiler isn’t working at optimal heating levels anymore, it’s time to call the professionals for a quick resolution. We make sure the entire process is hassle-free.
Leaking Taps in Merrylands
A dripping tap will drive the whole family up the wall! From problematic kitchen or hand basin mixer cartridges to the bathroom shower that won’t stop dripping through the night, it’s all part of this well-known plumbing issue. Across Merrylands suburbs, worn-out washers are a common culprit behind unexpectedly high quarterly water bills. That’s why The Pied Plumber takes pride in fixing every leak, whether your tap uses a washer or a quarter-turn mechanism, and no matter how old or new it is—we sort it all out.
Blockages With In Household Drains around Merrylands
This is a regular occurrence among Merrylandssiders. Whether caused by children leaving their toys behind or a particular close relative arriving during the Christmas season, it often puts you in a jam.
Excessive grease buildup in kitchen sinks combined with long-haired family members often causes internal blockages, leading shower drains to slow or overflow. The Pied Plumber, with its twenty years of experience, has dealt with these problems numerous times. Unblocking floor wastes beside baths, swiftly managing kitchen drainage concerns, repairing overflowing laundry tubs, and even removing dried cement from shower drains left by previous tradespeople are services we offer. We ensure your drainage problem is fixed properly and provide you with knowledge to prevent future blockages.
The fact is, drains aren’t often attractive, and dealing with the ensuite or main bathroom toilet blockage without skilled assistance might do more damage in the long term.
Blocked External Drains in Merrylands
From time to time, and with increased frequency for some, you may experience gurgling near drains, typically in bathroom areas and even outside where sewer overflow is present. It’s essential to attend to these problems quickly once they arise, as these common plumbing issues are often fixed with ease!
Outside sewer service blockages are frequently caused by tree roots desperate to survive in Merrylands’s frequent droughts. Whether you’re in Merrylands, Frenches Forest or Mona Vale – these mainline choke matters are prevalent around Merrylands and all nearby regions. Branch line obstructions, boundary trap or shaft matters are our specialty. The Pied Plumber uses the latest in both high-pressure jet blasting and CCTV inspection drain clearing equipment for us to clean, detect, and locate precisely where the problem is so that your drainage wastewater system can be fully unblocked.
The same applies to stormwater drains that struggle under heavy rainfall. If downpipes back up near pits and strip drains overflow, we’ll promptly get you back on track while thoroughly checking the problem to prevent it happening again.

Our plumbers in Merrylands will be there as soon as possible to unblock, Jet-Blast, and clear your overflowing drains!
You can do the first thing if you have a blocked drain exacerbated by tree roots or paper to contact one of our specialists. Our after-hours emergency plumbing service will assist you in understanding the most common causes of drain blockages. When our team arrives, we will find and repair the blockage and ensure that your drains are installed to standard to avoid any future blockages.
Emergency Merrylands Plumber:
We know plumbing faults don’t only happen during the day; they frequently occur after you finish work, just as you’re about to shower or use the toilet. Our plumbing specialists are on call for you and your family 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Therefore, when a plumbing issue arises in Merrylands, our emergency team is ready to help at any hour, whether it’s late at night or the crack of dawn.
What To do In an After-Hours Merrylands Plumbing Emergency:
Keep your cool; assistance is only a phone call away. Emergencies are generally apparent, but your safety might not be as obvious. Take a few seconds to identify flood-prone areas, look for electrical risks, and if any water is around your storage hot water service, turn OFF the electrical hot water circuit immediately! Your electrical meter box must have the hot water circuit labeled “HWS,” “HOT WATER,” or “HW” for easy identification.
So, you’ve isolated your supplies and are about to call The Pied Plumber:
Although we have wet vacs and cleaning supplies, we believe this to be part of our emergency response. Having old towels on hand during an emergency is important and will certainly reduce the severity of damage inside your house. If there is a plumbing issue underneath a hand basin, toilet, or sink, chipboard cupboards and shelves can swell, causing irreversible damage. Whatever you do, never use hot air fans to relieve the situation, as this will escalate the damage before we arrive. Allow us to save your plumbing!
What do I do if a pipe bursts in my toilet, kitchen, laundry or ensuite?
Politely requesting a halt won’t generally resolve a burst line. Please try to locate your water meter before our arrival and, if it’s reasonable, assess if the leak stems from hot or cold water to determine which part to shut off. Without this, the meter may exhaust all water on hand.
If you’re calling from a residential property in Merrylands, there’s a good chance your water meter is positioned at the front of the property, usually aligned with your outdoor hose tap facing the street. To shut it off, make sure the meter tap is turned in a clockwise direction. Once done, turn on an external hose tap to verify that your water supply has been successfully turned ‘OFF’. This step also allows any residual water in your home’s piping to drain out safely elsewhere.
In emergencies occurring within a unit block in Merrylands, your unit isolation valve is most often located either beneath the kitchen sink or at the laundry tub. Unfortunately, the location of common property isolation valves is not bound by any definitive standards. Hence, The Pied Plumber advises all unit owners to consistently be conscious of where this vital component is positioned.

I discovered a toilet leak and Adam came out quickly to assess the issue. I live in a old building with tricky plumbing, and he managed to devise a solution. It was right before a long weekend, so Adam rearranged his work so he could get my new toilet installed before I went away. His work was excellent and the space was left super clean. Adam is great to deal with and the cost was very reasonable. I couldn't recommend him highly enough.

We called the Pied Plumber in because the very old toilet at the back of the house was leaking (partly because of some odd amateur plumbing that had been done by previous owners). Adam drew on his long experience to quickly identify the many problems, and came up with a good and cost-effective plan of action which he explained clearly. The work was then done efficiently, with a minimum of fuss and excellent cleaning up. Everything is working well, the plumbing at the back of the house has been intelligently sorted out and we would definitely recommend the Pied Plumber to others.

We have nothing but great things to say about Adam. Our hot water system died suddenly while we were away 6months ago and Adam was onto it quickly and efficiently, helping our house-sitter deal with what could’ve been a very complicated situation. Adam made it easy for all of us. And then just now the system blew up due to electrical cabling issues (to no fault of Adam’s) and Adam got in his car on a late Sunday evening, still on his holidays, to assess immediately. Not only that, he also got in touch with his recommended electrician who have also been fantastic.
A huge thank you to you Adam. and to all, we can’t recommend him enough.
A shower, in this case, is just an example. In theory, any hot water fixture can be affected by this problem. You may have hot water quickly on one side of the house and then worry it’s broken once you reach the other end.
These issues are mainly pipe sizing and length related problems. The further your heater is away from the fixture, the greater the heat loss and time taken to reach the furthermost tap. Even climate can affect the heat loss in lines.
Only when Hot water services have a lack of pressure preventing optimal flow is when these issues are insanely prevalent. Most of the time, we are able to provide solutions to improve or completely remedy your hot water problem.
In most cases, no. Vitreous ceramic cisterns often have parts—both original and aftermarket—that can solve the issue. However, if it’s a plastic cistern needing more than rubber replacements on the inlet and outlet, replacing it could be more economical. We factor in the age, model, and style of your cistern and suite to help you make the most informed decision possible.
At The Pied Plumber, we understand that knowing how to lower your water bills in Merrylands will go a long way to helping families manage their budgets within challenging climates. Never fear! There are ways that you can reduce your water bills, whether this be installing water-efficient appliances and fixtures or by ensuring that leaks are isolated and fixed promptly. These actions will not only help you save money on your water bills but assist in conserving water, we can all help save our dams during drought seasons. Five strategies for saving money on your water bills in Merrylands
Check your toilet for leaks: Add a few drops of food colouring into the cistern and wait for 30 minutes. If the cistern is leaking into the pan, you will see the coloured water in the bowl.
Install a dual flush cistern: This can save you up to 5 litres of water every time you flush the toilet, which can add up to thousands of litres per year.
Check fixture flow rates: Our family plumbers will check the flow rates of your shower heads, bath, vanity, kitchen and laundry taps and install water restrictors, which reduce the flow rates to save you money.
Repair leaking taps: One or more dripping taps can add up to a lot of wasted water and higher than expected bills. So whether these are indoors or outdoors, the prompt repair of leaking taps is essential to conserving water and saving money on your water bills in Merrylands.
Hidden underground leaks: Often, the first time you realise that you have an insidious underground water leak is when you receive an abnormally high water bill. However, leaks from underground mains water pipes can be challenging to locate, which is why our electronic line locating equipment comes in handy. Our family plumbers will quickly and efficiently find the source of your underground water leak and repair the pipes, helping you to save money on your water bills in Merrylands.
Lower your water bills with a water leak claim form When you have a concealed water leak underground and have promptly acted to fix the problem, you can claim credit for the additional water charges from the council. As licensed family plumbers in Merrylands, we will issue you with a water leak claim form, which you submit to Merrylands Water once we have repaired your water leak helping you lower your water bill in Merrylands following a hidden leak. Short answer; check your cleaner packaging before use. Anything bleach-based, when used inside your cistern, can chemically deteriorate internal rubbers and valve parts. If your cistern cleaner is bright blue in particular – this voids most manufacture warranties of cistern components. A quick tip from the boss: If you’re one to use cleaners inside the toilet rim, look into dissolvable stick-on products rather than hanging manifolds. You’d be surprised how many call-outs Plumbers obtain from foreign objects caught down the dunny when flushed. Some can involve fairly significant works to retrieve. Just remember – bleach for the pan, not your cistern! We’re always happy for a chat if you’re experiencing any issues. 1300 13 80 80
Unsatisfactorily low water pressure may be reasonably simple to diagnose in certain situations. Below is a check-list of possible triggers, from the more popular to the uncommon supplementary causes of low water pressure:
Your meter tap washer is broken and thus disallowing optimal flow through the meter assembly.
You have a pressure limiting or reduction device fitted to the meter outlet, which may require replacement.
Merrylands Water has reduced the street pressure supply to prolong outdated and weakened mains pipes from breaking.
Your fixture tap outlets have become clogged with debris—this is a common problem, particularly after a split in a street main, causing fixture tap outlets to become blocked. This is a common problem, particularly after a break in a road main.
Your water supply lines are undersized for the number of fixtures you now have around your property. Particularly when homes have been renovated and fixture numbers have doubled without updating water supplies to accommodate the increased flow rates necessary to operate the dwelling
You have a below ground leak on the property; depending on the severity of the leak, this may impact your working pressures to fixtures.
You perhaps have a hidden pressure-reducing device fitted somewhere on the property. A full house inspection is often necessary to source these.
The key concern here is: Don’t wait for your next water bill to arrive. Check that your water meter isn’t ticking over constantly, and if concerned – we’re a call away.
Fortunately, you’re not alone—this prevalent problem in Merrylands households is, most of the time, due to either hot water cylinder rust or cast-iron pipe supply issues. (if in older properties) Open your taps independently to check whether the discolouration occurrence is on both hot and cold sides. If your issue is predominantly from the hot side – your hot water heater is asking for a check-up. Are you finding this on both sides? It’s a likely supply issue. Discolouration can range from a slight cloudy white tinge to black, brown and orange water supplies. To check, simply fill a clear cup sample and focus notably on the bottom for sedimentation. On occasion, even a Merrylands Water street mains break can affect surrounding property supply, so in the meantime, continue using your plumbing and, after a day or two – if the problem persists, have this looked over. Otherwise, give us a call! We would be more than happy to help. 1300 13 80 80
The maximum and most ideal house pressure range is 500KPA. This is achieved throughout most of Merrylands; however, some areas have been known to exceed this immensely. Furthermore, in these particular locations, we’ll often find problem issues that rarely occur elsewhere. High-pressure notably reduces lifespan and increases wear in pipes and valves. Water hammering concerns are prevalent in these scenarios, and generally, water use in high-pressure homes is far greater than their optimal pressure counterparts. Unfortunately, Merrylands Water does not guarantee a maximum supply pressure, leaving the sole discretion of the consumer to protect their property. As plumbers, we can easily perform a pressure test and, if necessary, install a water meter pressure-limiting device to safeguard your home.

Water hammering or odd audible noise emanating from plumbing fixtures can commonly cause burst pipes and property damage if left unattended. It may seem insignificant but certainly, a worthy idea to check for peace of mind.
Water damage outside shower screens, bubbling paint along walls and adjacent rooms, dampness or discolouration around ceilings along with off stagnant odour around plumbing areas. Avoid an insurance claim, have this checked.
Higher than usual water bills is a relatively standard method of establishing whether you have an issue. If you’re unable to identify the cause of the billing discrepancy – It might be worth having your house inspected for leaks.
Gurgling and varying water levels in toilets, floor wastes, and outdoor drains are a giveaway sign that you have a sewer blockage. This is the time to have your plumbing assessed to prevent overflowing drains.
Hot water no longer producing a reasonable tempered supply; A plethora of causes may result in this scenario – All of which should be appropriately assessed by a licenced plumber.
The sudden drop in your outside garden grassed area? This might sound like a sinkhole or something out worldly, although it is usually a result of drainage breaks underground.
Broken sewer lines are the usual culprit as there’s a regular supply of waste passing through these pipes, which can draw in the surrounding ground as waste matter passes. These issues should adequately be assessed even if your grass has never been greener!Since our establishment in 1995 – You’ve had it, we’ve seen it.
For the most part – It’s not a secret language. This refers to sets of rules outlined by countries, states and regions worldwide with the objective of providing safe method, practice and installation of plumbing materials and systems fit for public health and safety. We operate within the guidelines of the Australian Merrylands region, which is primarily governed by the AS/NZ 3500 standard and NSW code of practice. So if you overhear a plumber saying, “That’s not to standard!” – It’s probably good news that he or she knows the rules which must be carried out.
Straight from the Pied Plumber’s owner—nothing annoys more than settling a price and getting a sneaky extra charge. Since 1995 – We have never surcharged a VISA or MASTERCARD expense back to our customers. We will, however, continue to charge 1.5% on AMEX.
Yes—pipe size truly does matter. The original pipe sizing in your home may have only met minimum standards. With extensions or additions, your required flow rates may have doubled, resulting in pressure drops in your water or gas supply. Often, these issues stem from poor plumbing design. Whether it’s adjusting a gas regulator or assessing pipes post-meter, The Pied Plumber will inspect and offer practical solutions tailored to your needs.
We’re proud to advise – NO! The Pied Plumber is a family-owned business. Furthermore, that’s just the way we like it!

This flimsy piece of paper is documentation usually found with your house sale contracts, which can significantly assist in locating the position of below-ground sewer pipework. In essence, it’s a vague outline of your outdoor sewer service and, in most cases outdated, however, it does have relevance during scenarios where a Plumber is unable to locate essential final sewer points, as oftentimes these are buried underground in older dwellings. It also gives further knowledge on the whereabouts of mains infrastructure. It is always a good idea to have this document on hand ready before a plumber arrives. If unobtainable, visit the Merrylands Water website and purchase a downloadable copy.
